Video Production Process Made Simple

Learn the steps involved in my video production process—from planning to final delivery—based on real-world experience producing broadcast-ready branded content.

Video Production Process Made Simple

Introduction

Creating the perfect video involves a lot more than just hitting "record." As someone who’s spent years producing branded content, commercials, and animated explainers, I’ve learned that having a clear, proven process is everything.

When I executive produced the Sustainable GOAT branded series—created to spotlight sustainability innovators and distributed through ReachTV to airports and hotels worldwide—I leaned on this exact process. It’s how I ensure that the creative is aligned with business goals, that the shoot runs smoothly, and that the final product meets a high bar for storytelling and polish.

Whether you're producing a fast-paced promo, a heartfelt documentary short, or an animated how-to, the steps are remarkably similar. Here's how I approach every production, from first idea to final upload.

1. Planning and Pre-Production
Brainstorming Ideas and Developing the Concept

It all starts with a creative brainstorm. This is the wide-open phase where I gather with the client or my creative partners to explore angles, messaging, and tone. What’s the story? Who’s the audience? What’s the emotional hook?

Once we align on the big idea, I distill it into a working concept—complete with tone, structure, and key takeaways. With Sustainable GOAT, for example, the concept was simple but powerful: profile mission-driven founders and turn their insights into short, shareable, cinematic stories.

Storyboarding and Scriptwriting

Next, I build the roadmap. For live-action, that means storyboards or visual outlines of what we want to capture. For animation or mixed-media content, I’ll often start with animatics—rough timing tests to lock in pacing.

The script ties it all together. Whether it’s VO-driven or interview-based, I ensure the language reflects the tone of the brand while staying clear and compelling.

Scheduling and Budget Planning

This is where logistics meet creativity. I map out a detailed production calendar, align on deliverables, and create a production budget that reflects the scope while maximizing value. I’ve run both lean and high-end shoots—what matters is transparency, smart allocation, and staying ahead of potential hiccups.

2. Production Stage: Bringing Ideas to Life

Setting Up Equipment

Whether I’m overseeing a studio shoot or remote location filming, setup is everything. We prep cameras, lighting, and audio gear to suit the visual style and shooting conditions. I make sure everything is tested and ready—no surprises once we’re rolling.

Directing and Filming

This is where the concept becomes reality. I work closely with the director, talent, and crew to capture the story as envisioned—while staying open to spontaneous moments that elevate the piece. I always plan for multiple takes, alternate framing, and subtle performance variations to give us options in the edit.

Ensuring High-Quality Sound and Lighting

Two words: don’t compromise. Good lighting brings your visuals to life, and clean sound is non-negotiable. I use experienced sound techs and gaffers to make sure the shoot feels as polished as the concept demands. Whether it’s a corporate shoot or a fast-paced run-and-gun setup, I tailor the approach to match quality expectations.

3. Post-Production Process

Editing the Footage

In post, everything comes together. I start by reviewing selects, organizing footage, and building the initial cut against the storyboard and script. This is where pacing, tone, and structure are refined. For branded content like Sustainable GOAT, I pay close attention to flow—ensuring the message hits, but the story breathes.

Transitions, pacing, and framing are tightened here. Every second counts.

Adding Motion Graphics and Animation

Depending on the project, I’ll incorporate custom motion graphics—whether it’s subtle lower-thirds or full-frame animated sequences. These elements aren’t just visual garnish—they help clarify, emphasize, and amplify key messages.

Sound Design and Mixing

Once picture is locked, I layer in music, ambient sound, and audio FX. I mix to broadcast standards when needed, or platform-specific requirements for digital or social. Balanced sound ensures the final product feels complete and immersive.

4. Finalizing and Delivering the Project

Reviewing and Approving the Final Cut

I don’t just deliver and disappear—I review everything thoroughly and invite collaborative feedback.

Together with the client, I ensure the final version hits every creative and strategic note. Small tweaks at this stage often make a big difference.

Exporting in Various Formats

I export in multiple formats depending on where the content is headed—whether it’s Instagram Reels, a YouTube pre-roll, or airport TV screens like with ReachTV. I always deliver high-res masters alongside web-ready versions, making the rollout simple and seamless.

Delivering and Distributing the Final Product

Final delivery includes not just the video file, but also supporting assets, caption files, thumbnails, and recommendations for distribution strategy. In many cases, I help with placement, optimization, and performance tracking. A great video deserves a smart release plan.

Conclusion

Every successful video project—no matter the budget or format—relies on a structured, flexible process. From concept to delivery, I’ve built my workflow to be adaptable, collaborative, and results-driven. It’s a method I’ve refined across hundreds of projects, from startup launches to large-scale branded series like Sustainable GOAT.

If you’re looking to bring your next video idea to life—whether it’s a short-form brand story, an educational piece, or a docu-style series—I’d love to help you make it happen.

Let’s make something powerful together.
